Ireland and Halloween: A Storage Challenge

Ireland is the birthplace of Halloween — the festival of Samhain originated here over 2,000 years ago. Modern Irish families take Halloween seriously, with elaborate garden displays, light shows, and costumes that rival anything you'd see in the US. But where do you put it all for the other 11 months?

What Needs Storing?

  • Inflatables: Garden ghosts, pumpkins, witches — deflate completely before storing
  • String lights and projectors: Wrap carefully, store in dry conditions
  • Costumes and masks: Hang rather than fold to prevent creasing and damage
  • Props and lawn ornaments: Tombstones, skeletons, fog machines
  • Pumpkin carving tools: Clean and dry before storing to prevent rust

How to Store Halloween Decorations Properly

The key enemies are moisture and temperature extremes. Avoid damp attics or unheated sheds where condensation can damage electronics and fabrics. Use plastic tubs rather than cardboard boxes (mice love cardboard). Label everything clearly — you'll thank yourself next October.

For inflatables, ensure they're completely dry before deflating and rolling. Store motor units separately in a dry location.

Storage Options and Costs

Most Halloween collections fit in a small storage space (10–25 sq ft). At commercial rates, that's €60–€120/month in Dublin. On Packhood, you might find an attic or garage space for €35–€60/month.
