Student storage at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland — and side income for students who host

Cheap summer storage near RCSI for students who don't want to pay €2,700+ in rent on an empty room. Plus how broke RCSI students earn meaningful side income hosting their box room, vacated bedroom or parents' garage on Packhood.

TL;DR for RCSI students

  • As a renter: €165–€300 for the full 3-month summer (box-room volume). Vs €2,700–€3,900 to keep your Dublin room over summer.
  • As a host: €500–€1,800/year per space; D4 supply is limited but premium. The cheapest, lowest-effort student side income in Ireland.
  • Same Packhood account does both — list a space, book a space, repeat.

Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland at a glance

~3,500 students (high international share). RCSI's main campus is on St Stephen's Green in Dublin city centre. The student body is one of the most international in Ireland — Middle East, Asia, North America, mainland Europe — and most students rent in Dublin 2 / Dublin 4 / Dublin 6.

Transport: Luas Green Line (St Stephen's Green stop on doorstep), DART (Pearse 8 min walk), citywide bus.

Term timing: Medical-school calendar runs Sept–early-June with shorter holidays than humanities; clinical-year students often stay through summer for placements. But undergrad-year RCSI students fully vacate.

Host side — how broke RCSI students earn meaningful side income

Most students go looking for a part-time job to plug the gap between SUSI and rent. Hosting on Packhood replaces or supplements that — same euros into your account, zero shifts, and the work is essentially "list once, collect monthly". Three scenarios that work for RCSI students specifically:

ScenarioTypical earningsHow it works
Summer-vacant D4 / D6 bedroom€140–€260/moRCSI's international intake means most students go home for full June–August. D4 / D6 host listings clear €420–€780 for the break.
Box room in a Ranelagh / Rathmines RCSI house-share€100–€185/moLocal term-time demand is strong; the box room earns regardless of who's home.
Parents' garage / attic — international students opportunity is small (most are abroad)LimitedFor RCSI students from outside Ireland this scenario doesn't apply; for the Irish minority it works as for any other Dublin uni — €40–€100/mo year-round.

Income range across all scenarios: €500–€1,800/year per space; D4 supply is limited but premium. Hosts receive 95% of the listed amount; Packhood's 5% fee covers identity verification, the Host Guarantee (up to €300 per booking), and Stripe escrow. List a space in ~12 minutes from Become a host.

Why hosting beats a part-time job for most RCSI students

A typical 8-hour shift at minimum wage clears about €100 net after tax. The same €100 comes out of one month of hosting your box room — and unlike the shift, you don't lose 8 hours, you don't have to commute, and the income compounds across the academic year. Stack two listings (your box room + parents' garage at home) and you replace a 2-shift-a-week job with two emails a year.

The catch: it's slower to ramp than a job. Your first booking lands 2–6 weeks after listing. After that, the cadence is steady — most RCSI-area listings get 3–7 enquiries / month and a 30–50% booking rate. Reviews compound: hosts with 4+ reviews see ~2× the booking rate of new hosts.

FAQ — RCSI students

Is RCSI summer storage different from other Dublin unis?

Mostly the same — but the high international share (large Middle East / Asia / North America cohorts) means students often go home for 3 full months. Summer-vacant D4 / D6 RCSI rooms are common and the host scenario is high-yield.

How much is storage near RCSI on St Stephen's Green?

Ranelagh, Rathmines, D4 and Donnybrook rates run €55–€115/mo for a student box-room. 3-month summer totals: €165–€300.

Can clinical-year RCSI students do summer storage?

Yes — clinical placements often run year-round, but the storage need is the same: stash bulky stuff (textbooks, sports gear) at a host nearby and free up your D4 box room. Many do this for 6+ months at a stretch.

Does RCSI offer student summer storage?

Like other Irish universities, RCSI doesn't provide summer storage — packhood-style hosts in nearby Ranelagh / Rathmines / D4 cover the gap.

Tax?

Storage income in Ireland is Case IV miscellaneous income, not the rent-a-room scheme — that scheme is for accommodation only. The €5,000 Case IV threshold below which Form 12 applies (vs Form 11) covers most student hosts comfortably. Note: international RCSI students storing income abroad have separate considerations — speak to a tax advisor.
